The term "yapping" has been used by people far older than everyone in that room. Just because younger folks are plastering the word all over social media doesn't mean it's a word they invented or laid claim to.

A quick google suggests that therm first showed up like 300+ years ago as a description for the sound of noisy, high-pitched dogs (as opposed to barking being for the deeper noises), but by the 19th century it had also become slang for any sort of annoying, noising utterances by anything, including people. And it's carried both those definitions ever since.

It's always seen regular use. It might be at a particular peak right now, but it was popular enough before to not seem unusual for anyone to say it regardless of age.

Honestly, I didn't even know that it was a thing at the moment, but I didn't bat an eye at it being used in this chapter. It's not unusual and I'm probably closer to the parent's age than the main characters.
