Falling for a character so hard you want to date them... I'm pretty sure most people don't have to fall particularly hard for someone to entertain thoughts of dating them.

That kind of character is reasonable popular. There are tons of things that would be questionable (or worse) in real life people enjoy in fiction. And there's nothing wrong with that. Romance in particular includes a lot of this.
