Just a quick opinion poll here:

Volume 5 doesn't come out for a while yet (probably June) so we're working off the magazine raws now... and they are rough. The volume raws just need a little denoising to correct for compression artifacts, but these raws need significant upscaling and screentone replacement.

So... would you prefer us to wait for the volume raws, or are the pages in chapter 49 good enough?

I wouldn't mind waiting, but I know how impatient people get and some might see the chance to swing in and use AI for easy clicks n tricks for donations n shit.

Yeah, we already had one group try to snipe while we were super active uploading, but the concern is that waiting 2 to 3 months for the next release is basically inviting another snipe attempt.

That said, the bad raws also mean the CLRD task is much harder, so I am tempted to wait if only to spare their time.

I'd say wait for volume raws, but we seem to be on a plague of crappy upstart translators just jumping in and offering up crappy work for people who want instant gratification, then begging for cash out of it, so I fear that a gap of a few months might lead to that happening here and then the fickle part of the audience won't care and will back those people instead of the people like you guys who do good work.

Yeah, the rise of AI slop with donation requests has been a little disheartening.

An unavoidable truth, yeah. Seen way too many cases where a sniper comes in, releases trash, and even when the main group comes along and does a proper release, all of the views and discussion happened under the trash. We all do this for free, so it's not like we're losing money by publishing second -- It's just... disheartening.

I think this chapter is good enough, I've seen way, way worse stuff on mangadex. In fact, I didn't even notice anything strange, quality-wise, on this chapter.

That said, if you want to wait for the volumes in order to have the best quality and not work twice on the same chapter, that's understandable as well.

I say it's very a good start ...because many newbie have hard time to even sell a single copy, left alone 6 copies

I didn't even notice anything strange, quality-wise, on this chapter.

We do upscaling for some of our other series and we've gotten pretty good at it. It takes a while to put together a custom network for a series, but that time has already been spent.

This author sometimes does things like putting screentones on a slight angle, and making their opacity/darkness slightly gradient. Then when the publisher's compression comes along it makes a bigger mess of the screentones than usual.

In this case, though, the magazine raws were so bad that you'd end up with a large checkerboard of screentone and flat color. When that happens, the upscaling network needs to use models that replace areas with screentone (But not all areas of flat color!). Honestly, I went through 20+ network variations and hours upon hours of testing to find a combination of models/steps that worked this well.

I tend to look at these things a lot more closely than any reader would, so it's hard for me to not see the parts where things look a little wonky.

The chapter looked fine to me, so if this is the expected quality I'm not against working with magazine raws. Now, if it turns out to be too much work I won't complain if we have to wait for the volume.

Back to the chapter, sensei was cute, although I was also expecting her to claim Kouki as hers before the other woman.

Thanks for the TL! I agree with others who think waiting for the raws is going to invite snipers. You do a great job so I’d hate for that to happen. And I thought the art in this chapter looked just fine!
