Smoking isn't AS big of a thing in Japan as it used to be, but it's still a thing. You can still smoke in a LOT of public buildings, so, it's not THAT unusual for her to pick it up for that reason and continue...

Yeah, before the time skip, she was a teenager who never really went through a rebellious phase and had overprotective parents as well. So seeing this change in her is quite interesting. Still, the time skip made me think that I would’ve preferred to see these changes happening gradually
