That's the thing though, dude is basically like a high functioning sociopath, we clearly see he's basically completely batshit insane and obsessed but he's smart enough for long term planning and thinking, he knows he can't win anymore, she'll never be his and he can't kill her either, so he'll do the last option he got, kill himself in front of her so he'll forever stay in her heart in some twisted way

I think we're supposed to take it as he was always like that deep down, he simply didn't had reason to go murdering people before

You know I do feel slight bit of pity for Ludwig. It’s very obvious he felt needed to be with her and he broke inside because he wasn’t able to do so. I have to wonder what would have happened if he had simply confessed to her before she ended up with the PM and if it would have gone very differently if he had done so.
