Mom was well-meaning but a bit stupid overall. She got overconfident in her vampire powers and this is where it lead her. Also with the police why didn't she make up a lie about some vagrant who passed through the forest once and killed those people or something. She is a woman and has her powers to control other to some degree!
Anyway I can't wait to see whats gonna happen now that she is dead as she was a major player in the story.
