Wasn't expecting ace/aro out of this manga, neat! Regarding Luna, I think she went into the relationship with good intentions and wanted it too work out, so Riri's portrayal of her as using Mai isn't correct. She just has a lack of social/feeling awareness and terminal case of foot-in-mouth disease, so she wasn't aware of how badly she hurt Mai breaking up with her the way she did.

I don't think this absolves her of responsabiltiy or anything, she really should have explained her feelings to Mai then, and she should apologize for the hurt she caused Mai. But I think portraying Luna as malicious isn't correct, she's more on the obliviously hurtful and guarded side of things.

I think it's rather harsh to portray Luna as "using" Mai, rather than her wanting to have a normal romantic relationship where she can fall in love too. It's made pretty clear that Luna was hoping for their relationship to make her feel something in return, but she didn't, because she's (probably) aro/ace.

It's not that she used her, it's that she came to realize that their relationship couldn't be the way either of them imagined it, because Luna couldn't fall in love.

I find it really disingenuous to act like Luna was doing something wrong or being malicious when she wanted to fall in love and have a proper relationship with someone. Relationships don't always work out the way you want them to, and in this case especially, neither of them are at fault. Just because Luna couldn't feel the same way doesn't mean she used Mai.
I really want to agree with you but if you look at the chain of events it really seems like Luna has very little consideration for Mai at all. In the last chapter she steamrolled all over her with regards to her relationship to Riri (even if this was done out of concern); she broke up with Mai and immediately got a new partner without properly explaining anything to Mai (leaving her in a fugue for over two months); and despite knowing Mai presumably well enough to understand her naivety, people pleasing and anxiety about hurting people, she still expected Mai to be friends with her like their relationship hadn't changed in the slightest (Mai obviously bares some responsibility for her attitude as well ofc).

I agree with you that Luna isn't malicious (and maybe I'm painting her in a worse light than I should) but I do think she has disregarded Mai's feelings in a big way with how she approached their relationship.

It was pretty awful to do but coming out as ace is hard. She didn't want to hurt mai but she couldn't take the internal suffering and lying anymore. She's also clearly emotionally stunted in a way. I agree it was partly wrong but it had to be done. Staying with mai would have been a different kind of cruelty and would have led mai to miss out on finding someone who can properly reciprocate her feelings.

It sucks overall but it makes a lot more sense now with the added context. She should've properly explained it when she broke up with mai but coming out as ace, even to her closest friend, was a hurdle she couldn't handle right away. I can sympathize with both of them.

i agree but i also think Luna should’ve offered more of an explanation of her situation as she was breaking up with Mai instead of just leaving it how she did. i feel like it would have softened the blow a little bit if Mai had at least some idea of why Luna was breaking up with her

What I think is hilarious is the antithesis Riri’s reaction poses.
A few chapters back(2 chapters ago,I believe),Luna tells Mai that Riri’s nickname in school was “Demon”.
Having heard this,Riri probably says the last line “you’re pretty devilish” to poke fun at her OWN nature(succubus),and to subtly show that she knows how Luna feels about her.
Riri is a retrospective character, while Luna is an introspective character.
EDIT: I like the translator’s choice of making Riri’s key dialogue in bold.
Yatosaki Haru has a habit of putting Riri’s text with a black background when she’s about to say something crucial to the plot.
This further reveals her nature as a semi omniscient character(aka she knows more than Mai,the main narrator).

The last scene made me laugh, even though it was pretty emotional. But I think mai's best friend can still say what she feels about and not steal our fluffy erotic yuri

Honestly as someone who'd tentatively describe themself as an aspec lesbian and went through a somewhat similar experience (though I went in after making it clear I was likely aspec and how that might affect the relationship), I don't think Riri's wrong here.

It's important to go into a relationship with disclosure about things that'll affect the relationship. Obviously you can't expect people to be perfectly rational actors about these things, but Luna kept so much private and expected a return to the previous status quo without putting in any emotional labour, which put a lot of burden on Mai who she knew had a habit of not speaking up under social pressure.

(I guess ppl have a lot of social freedom as teens in Japan but romantic relationships aside I wonder how many would've gotten away with "sorry my parents are really strict", my parents didn't let me do shit growing up, they def wouldn't have let me hang out with anyone after school let alone get a romantic partner [tho i would've rather had a normal hangout at a cafe, not chasing after boys or whatever lol] Or if not some part time job, there are some schools that don't allow it but in animanga it's always 50/50 with like "i have a shift at X place" or something like that versus like someone just 'inviting themselves over, b/c my parents don't even like answering the doorbell for anyone other than a package/delivery lol but that's more of a personal thing)

Yeah riri tell her! Just because you're aro/ace or on the lgbt+ spectrum you can still do dickhead things. They aren't mutually exclusive :lul:
The real thing is she gonna continue to do dickhead things or go "damn yeah for being my dear friend i did do you dirty i apologize for that" like she could spin this as "oh I'm the victim here" when she didn't communicate ANY feelings to her supposed dear friend and as we see from this flashback, knows its hard for her to say no and can spin on that people pleaser track and just took advantage of that.
Without even communicating in the very least a why or giving her space for a good while out of respect for her having feelings, its kinda selfish actually, but we can grow from here girl this is your chance

Great point! It is heavily implied that Riri CAN “feel” human’s emotions, like, look into their souls and stuff.
She IS the embodiment of human greed, lust, selfishness, etc.
That’s WHY she left Mai alone (besides her growing feelings for her),because she didn’t FIND any of those emotions.

Hear riri out on this, it’s cool that shes aroace and all but constantly hovering around your ex like that is a weird thing to do no matter who you are as a person, the best thing you can do for the other person is to cut them off and let them move on but shes keeping her close on the premise that she wants to keep the friendship, which is selfish in its own right, spoiled
