Did you boys miss the implications of the phrase "Hidden Church?" Alotte's parents lived in a mini-cult village hidden from the outside world. They were brainwashed to believe that raising a new saint is awesome, that the minister knew how to do it, and that the minister's plan was the right way to go about this. They fucked up, but they did so without knowing better.
