I was given the translation guidance on mangadex by a reader already. In order to not butt heads with japanese copyright law (bc idiots have made my translations aware on their social medias; some said where they read it), I prefer to make my translations amateur-like (going against what the guide said) and different (like slapping text on the actual letter). it has a nice flair for me personally as well.
I’ve tried to write the information as neutral as possible. But pathy can occur, so please be aware. I don’t notice it, when I lead a conversation to a specific direction myself. P.S. i lost the souce and structure here. i apologize for the bizarre structure and repeated lines.
Plot 1) Was my english maybe not that bad after all?
From chapter 10 - 29ish. I translated the chapters into english. I used google translator, japanese -> german. at roughly chapter 28+ (conversation got lost), I was informed, that google converts everything into english. meaning my strategy to understand what’s going on in the first place, and then translating the meaning; got doubled english (eng -> eng). My first proofreader informed me, that my english had better structure, thanks to the change (jap -> eng). [Subjective opinion: i thank everyone again, who made me aware of it 🫰.]
Plot 2)
I kept the translations of chapters 34, 36, 37, 38, 44, 45, 46 and 47 very close to their original; as they felt like farewell gifts of my said proofreader. Contrary to previously. I wasn’t “adjusting” (even although I have no idea, if it was more right) their english to what I believed was better.
I have no idea what native language my previous proofreader spoke. I have no contact to them, nor can they return to work on the chapters with me either. Work consumed their time; compared to their university studies (i thought both are straining on similar bases, ngl).
Plot 3) Is it due to a proofreader/translator difference?
Due to my first, previous proofreader’s real life, I had to change proofreaders. My current translator started out as my new proofreader. Since chapter 20 I felt a burn out from translating. It got worse and worse. The only part I was and still interested in, is the art of redrawing (and typesetting). One day I got sick physically, and I asked my new proofreader to just translate for me. They agreed and I had less of a burden. [shameless plug in: I’m
not searching for a new translator nor typesetter/redrawer due to that. I want my
terrible work done by myself.]
My new proofreader is also the current, full, english translator. They have been translating since the 31st chapter constantly. [subjective opinion: Which I really appreciate their work.]
Since they’re native(, american) english, I didn’t felt the need to “adjust” (I only sandpaper rough ends and tongue twisters. but don’t fully translate them.) the english (bc i’m lazy). There are times where I still do it, but it’s usually just sfx. As my brain is pre-programmed to have bad grammar and is bound for misspelling. I haven’t been “adjusting” their english, since a long time. So I’ll try it out again.

At the end, it heavily depends, what I’ve done well and what I didn’t do well. Maybe what I think is good, is actually bad and vice versa. So please, write out what you think. It doesn’t need to be criticism/feedback - but if you want me to change for the better, then it needs to be feedback (maybe with solutions, since I don’t know why it got worse). You can ask questions as well, but I can’t promise the answer you seek. I can only answer with what I understand and know.
