I wouldn't say it's deeply rooted in the kingdom but more so in the castle or among nobles. The people of the kingdom go by hearsay, they'd don't seem to know what he looks like.

Keep in mind that he's seems to be like by the populace when he goes out. So if they were to find out he's the 2nd prince they'd probably have his side.

I'd say it's already spread outside of the castle. Just look at what the citizens already thought of Char. The way I see it and how it typically goes, they are probably going to find out he is the 3rd prince and are going to freaking 180° on him as if he lied to them and betrayed their trust in order to take advantage of them.

Anyway, a lot of this could have been hindered if not avoided if the King wasn't an incapable father. Imagine not reigning in his older son (who is actually the cause of these problems) and instead making things worse for both the MC and Char.
