To help you out even more in spotting MTL, here's some clear indicators to look out for. (This pretty much works for all languages.)

• Sentences do not properly maintain patterns or context
• Difficult to follow dialogue
• Inability to properly use pronouns, or even be consistent with them.
  • I've literally seen some where they change someone's pronouns no less than three times in a single page.
• Inability to be consistent with the spelling of characters' names.
• Weird word usage or peculiar grammar.
  • Particularly if it gives you an "Inigo Montoya Moment" "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
• Typesetting obviously done in MS Paint
  • Well, maybe not always a sign of MTL, but common enough to raise a red flag.

Keep in mind, there are a few scanslators out there who do use MTL, but they know how to properly wrangle the machine translator (yes, there's a specific way of doing it that yields consistently coherent translations), they double-check their kanji dictionary for correct use within the sentence's context, and they have a solid grasp on the language they're translating to. And if we're lucky they may even have some knowledge about Japanese culture, wordplay, and idioms.

So there is a very big difference between just "MTL" and "MTL Trash" or "MTL Slop". MTL is entirely forgivable, so long as a good effort has been put into the process, and not just blatantly copy-pasta'd.
