Force Jake to make their challenge harder, win the challenge, expose his bias, get him fired anyways. Jake underestimated the power of a manga deuteragonist.
On the subject of clearing snow for a tent site- It's not that hard. You can use your foot and sweep the snow away, if it's under a foot deep. You won't get too tired. If it's over a foot deep, you should use snow as a material. Snow is a great insulator- that's why igloos exist. Holes in your tent? Bury it in snow. Warm and Cozy af! No tent? Build a quinzhee!

I get what they're trying for but I'm glad they had someone with them - that sort is what you do when everyone's already got some wilderness experience, especially with the cold.
