I've read a different summary of those same rules for gift-giving and receiving before from different places. I'm pretty sure that Japanese folks would want to kill me because I'm just autistic enough that I'd mess up the back-and-forth around the process without realizing that I was doing so. I don't get the social or emotional cues at all from Americans, let alone Asian folks who are typically less demonstrative.
Of course Shunske's gifts are AMAZINGLY personal, despite being very professionally related to his artisanry. I feel like in a more realistic situation, I'd make the gifts too personal, not personal enough, too expensive, or not expensive enough.
I do like that Ms. News Anchor picked up immediately on that Shunske was watching his hands around her daughter. That and the fact that he's literally a clothing designer somehow made the fact that he gave handcrafted sleepwear to a little girl less... questionable.
