Pages 7-8: I found it weird that he was 10th place and impressed by the positions of his peers (145th and 201st places), saying that they are smart and all, so I took a look at the original version, and he wasn't "10th out of 4031", he was 4031st in the nationwide exam and 10th in his class (https://i.imgur.com/l6rHtJS.png). Just clarifying for other potential readers.

@Pleinair - thank you, I found that strange as well, but had shrugged it off as some weird Japanese thing :)

Why is this guy such crap at exams if all he does is study? That’s actually really sad and depressing.
He's not really crap. Scoring 10th in his class in a school with at least 10 classes per year puts him in the top 3-5% range, and this school seems to be above average academically. He's genuinely impressive, but only on a local scale. At the national scale he's far enough from the top to be thoroughly unremarkable. More or less on the level of "the smart kid" in a normal classroom.
There is a very realistic kind of melancholy there though, that putting all your effort into being good at one thing and neglecting all else in your life isn't even likely to make you stand out.
