It's a common game played with karuta decks called utagaruta. The reader (Manabu in this example) draws a card with a random poem from the Hyakunin Isshu (a famous poetry collection from the late 1100s or early 1200s) and begins reading it. The cards scattered on the floor each have only the final line of a poem written on them, and the players race to be the first to find and grab the card corresponding to the poem being read aloud.
