Left as-is, it's bad for two reasons: it makes the mc look like he was more uncomfortable with their presence than their overall fukt up conditions😑; it makes the writer look like they were uncomfortable with slaves being in their story, even though they added slaves to their story🤨. Here's an idiom that the writer should've heard more of as a child: If you're gonna do it, do it right.
