I did like the premise better when it was one underdog using just his inborn primal instincts and clevernesss (along with his physique) to win these fights. He was always fated to lose, but squeezed out a win regardless.

Now he's basically the terminator. He just kills armed yakuza like it's literally nothing, they're barely able to slow him down.
I mean, this is still great, but whereas the earlier story had realism, this doesn't anymore. He's the last hobo from krypton, hellbent on the destruction of Yakuza :p

Bro no spoilers but from reading raws the other half of this arc is straight up a punisher comic including a kingpin like villain with actual soldiers

He killed the 7 weaklings in chapter 1 easily without any cleverness, and these specific Yakuza guys are clearly supposed to be bottom-list fodder like them - much weaker than the military-esque units MC killed earlier.

Not the first time, he could've done it when they rescued Mitsuki and Fincher from the brother and his gang and didn't. I guess Ojiro feels more comfortable with his homebrew.

He's an amateur, better off sticking to weapons he is familiar and trained with (he built them himself, even) than picking things off the ground

No. He would be much better off with real guns. Firearms have a long history and development behind them. Some of the developers were geniuses and left their mark in the history of weapons. They would also be a lot easier to use than anything he could build himself. Guns aren't like flying a fighter jet. An ape could be trained to use a gun, and could actually use one accidentally easily enough since ape hands are similar to human hands.

It's not like the manga would have done poor work showcasing Ojiro's handmade weapons, but aside from bombs and such, as soon as he got his hands on guns, he should have used them.

That being said, this show left realism behind a long time ago, so I don't particularly care. Ojiro sticking to his own gizmos and slaughtering gun-wielding yakuza with them is still more realistic than Japan having replaced their self-defence force with a yakuza army.
