I'm embarrassed to say, but it was just last week I learned that tanuki are real creatures. I guess their English name is a "racoon dog" (though they're related more closely to foxes) and they are native to east Asia. THEY'RE SO MYSTIFIED I THOUGHT THEY WERE SOME KIND OF YOKAI AAAAAAHHHHHH.
