Where the point isn't to find and present some rare or novel info no that no else has ever seen before, it's to have a good enough grasp of a set of widely known and respected sources that you can cite those sources to support whatever argument you're making. Preferably on the fly. Also in those times "a good enough grasp" probably included memorizing the major sources.
Point is the list of those sources is like 0.25% of being able to do that lol
