He already had it on while going after the Shellfish, but since it was chanted with the ring on it lasted long enough that it conveniently ran out after the beat it (according to this chapter). Hell, last chapter they make a point about him chanting it right before going for the Shellfish too.

There's a bunch of more miserable examples of him being worthless, at least mention one that doesn't have a textual explanation in the page.
