The complete tonal whiplash once we returned to regularly scheduled programming confirms it was a terrible idea in the first place and went on way too long.

IMO it's less the tone but the character coming out of nowhere.

I don't mind serious arcs in series similar to this (Kaguya-sama, Dragon Maid, etc.) but they are done well, the arc is usually built up over time, and has something to do with the characters involved in the arc.

Julius came out of effing nowhere so no one in the series has any personal stakes regarding him.

Of course, it doesn't help that he's cartoonishly evil while making him invincible.
