Stockholm Syndrome has become something of a Self-Fulfilling Meme, however:

1.) People believe it is real or do not believe it is fake, whichever aligns with their worldview
2.) People are exposed to extreme amounts of stress they have no way to mitigate or traumas they must push through, in order to achieve a basic living quality
3.) "I must be crazy to let myself keep going through this" eventually progresses in effect to the known characteristics Stockholm Syndrome describes, even if just through psychosomatic reasoning or habits formed through survival drive.

MC included that in the explanation of the experiment (page 16).

And it absolutely makes sense that that would be part of the story, given that Rua has already demonstrated she would absolutely do the same as the researcher.
