I thought they will never gonna point out that Taira's retirement is related to Aoi taking away his position but they actually use it as Aoi's development.

Honestly I don't see why Ashito need to learn defense from Akutsu at all cost as if there's no other player to teach him that. It would be okay if he tried to learn it from someone first and 'fail' and then try to learn from Akutsu afterwards. We don't even really know why Akutsu is the best fit for Ashito. But no, Ashito is an angel and Akutsu is the only holy savior apparently. No reluctance whatsoever from him. Is this really the same person that actually valued dignity? Ashito used to headbutt the dude who mocked his mother, and actually talked back against Akutsu's assholery early in the story.

I know it's been set up for Ashito to learn from Akutsu, but I really prefered it more if Ashito actually tried a different path from Akutsu due to difference in ideals.

personally, i think akutsu is the best choice to teach someone like Aoi, first is because they are both the "indifferent" players of the team so more than anyone else he may be the one to understand him the most. Second, is Aoi's skill, among his peers I don't think anyone will be able to know how to properly utilize it or to teach him how to fully use it. Third, Aoi is lacking, he needs someone who can not only teach him the foundation and basics of defense but also someone who is strict enough to teach him that. It is seen at times that Aoi have this side in which he refuse to listen to others and most often his views can be one-sided. That's why I think akutsu is best person to teach him about defense
