why did Asa kill Hikaru?

That's the only thing that picked my interest.

It wasn't Asa. It was related to a different girl but the gist of it is that he was having an affair with a relative and they're from an influential family so it wasn't allowed. Hikaru wanted to elope but then an accident happened and Hikaru drowned.

Of course, the plot isn't as simple as I put it and there's more drama involved, but if you like this manga I really recommend you read the novel. Every volume is dedicated to one of the former lovers of Hikaru and this manga only covered Aoi's volume. As a romance novel it's top tier already but then it's also a pretty good mystery novel. Also the translation is better than most.

Why did they end the manga in such an incomprehensible way? It feels like the manga was cut off midway through. It would have been better to end with

The end! But no, they had to add another ten pages with an incomprehensible afterword. The manga is good; the ending spoils the overall impression a bit. In general, it could've been better. Alas.
