I think that all cultivation business works either by "heavens" being a system and cultivators intent and way he uses qi determine how system will manifest his skill. I think this way because of how orderly everything is. For example to manifest detailed dragon out of energy you would have to manually control how it looks, behaves, etc. It would take all your attention just to shape it. Also whole tribulation thing shows that heavens are monitoring cultivators and tribulation could be a way to reestablish link when cultivator becomes to strong.

Second way how it would work is Magic and don't think about it.
