A large number of PhDs have never had a job outside of Post Doc work or TA'ing, and unless you are working doing that very thing, its very difficult to parlay that into getting hired. This not too hard when you were working in a lab for Doctorate doing research. Its much more hard when its a PhD in say basket weaving or Medieval Manuscripts.Well, just stumbled upon this, just my 2 cent after working in the industry for so long and have even hired people in multiple occasion.
Whoever that hire people for work are just people like you, they are influence by recommendation, and any potential factors that could help them make a better decision. When you are a fresh graduate, the strongest criteria for comparison is your education result, followed by interview result and so on. If your education score is below average, you don't even get a chance for interview, that's just how it works. Phd is not exactly a good metric for hiring when it comes to higher skill level jobs, for that, a lot more factors are in play, specific to its own industry and job position, recommendation and knowing people are important when it comes to management jobs, but so are technical skills and achievements in different type of jobs.
If you are studying, don't take stranger excuses to not work hard.
Post majors.Me; Always scoring high, know several languages, have finished a few studies and scoring one of the highest. Status, unemployed.
My sister; PhD Cum Laude (with honors). Status, unemployed.
Her husband; never studied, has a high paying job because he knows the right people.
I don't know the specific names of each but I'll tell you more or less; teacher of teachers (yes you heard that right), languages teacher, travel agent, hotel related stuff as well, event manager and translator. I've obviously worked in the ones mentioned and I've been in construction sites where I've literally seen a coworker lose his leg and another to DIE - I ended up running away from the job quite literally, it was too shocking and I'd rather kill myself than to come back to anything construction related.Post majors.
