While I'm not going to really defend it, I'm pretty sure they are in their second year of middle school (eighth grade,) so it wouldn't be all THAT sheltered. That puts them at about 13-14. It's highly possible none of them have started their period yet.

Though even around me there was basic sex-ed in the middle of middle school (seventh grade,) so...

And Just as Flavor25 said, biological have teach like two class about body and they would change over puberty, without talk about sex.And also try to make it fast just like how in this chapter portray.
