Just saw the killer’s game, on my way to the car I started thinking what makes a good assassin vs assassin(also a battle royal or death tournament) story. You need a reasonable sized cast, a stage to introduce them and their styles, and make it so the main character can beat all the foes while also taking his licks.
1. Reasonable sized cast- Basically you got a mix of too many cooks in the kitchen and the inverse ninja law. If you got a death game you can only make 1/4 of them cool enough to be a side character. Even in an assassin vs assassin you basicly got the pyramid at the top is the MC (Joe flood, John wick, ladybug) next are the big guns the ones that do the most damage to the Mc, after that are the medium guns ones that get one good shot, the little guns that have a gimmick and are cool cannon fodder, and at the bottom you got the cannon fodder people that last less then 10 seconds and allows the guns to show off.
2. Stage and style- basically if you show how the guns kill be it poison, hand to hand, sniping, or a supernatural power that’s when you make bets who will last the longest. In an assassin vs assassin movie this is showing them kill cannon fodder before the contract dings on their phones, in a battle royal this is them killing another contestant with their gimmic, in a tournament this is them finishing off another team in the first round with one guy who is the “weakest”
3. The showdown- what else needs to be said this is where we see who the author loves the most in a battle/tournament and how hurt do we make the MC assassin before his opponent is left too hurt to continue or is dead.
Also a death tournament manga is different than a tournament arc. In one you don’t know the winner because any number of the characters could be the winner.
