At this stage I’m not even sure if Asumi actually HAS romantic feelings for anyone, or that she has compartmentalised sex as a recreational activity so much that she just doesn’t recognise her own feelings. Perhaps that’s the whole crux of the problem with both Mai and Asumi. Mai is confusing her professional pride with her feelings towards Asumi, and Asumi has spent so long having sex without progressing her goal of finding Mai that, once she has reached her goal, she has no idea what she wants now she’s found her. The only evidence that Mai is different is because she is still going slow with her, and sees the others as a scratch for her itches. Even Nanao (sorry shippers).

Asumi is already a top-leaning switch, her barrier to topping isn't really skill, just self confidence. She's had a lot of sex with Nanao, so she's very comfortable being intimate with her now, nothing like the awkward fumbling of their first time together. That gave her the confidence to take charge when she felt like doing so the last time they fucked.
Asumi doesn't have that kind of experience with Mai (yet), plus she's been building up the reunion with Mai in her head for years, so she's definitely lacking the self-confidence to top still.

I kinda feel like Mai was built up in the readers' heads as much as she was Asumi's, until she became this mythical "El Dorado" type deal wherein the reality might never have been able to match the hype.

Especially since when we finally do find Mai, she's flustered over meeting her first crush Asumi, whereas Asumi ....wanted to find Mai and kiss her again, to compare to her first kiss from years back?? Just kinda incongruent in terms of what I think we the readers were anticipating for their reunion versus what we got.

That's my read on her, anyway. We get her at her not-best with her mojo broken, and she hasn't even slept with Asumi yet. So maybe when we see her in better circumstances, her stock will rise and join the quality of the other characters depicted thus far. Or so I hope.
