I think the problem that you were having is the ongoing experience making it feel like an eternity when this a completely normal and well paced flow of events. If we got some big flashback and a lot of focus on Mai and then just focus on other things it would be very anticlimactic, but it got just lightly touched upon and Asumi was never in fervently in love or anything
