Intent is more important.
You can have interesting stories with OPMCs, look at OPM.
The thing is, the reader needs other things to focus on.
Interesting characters, world, interesting usage of his powers, etc.

I think the author doesn't want to draw fight scenes (because he doesn't know how or doesn't feel like it) and wants to focus on how HE would live in a fantasy world.
