I kinda expected it. I mean, there were some fake outs before but in previous chapter it was already being prepared. When they said he'd go as her bodyguard, with a sword, but Azumi wouldn't carry one I suspected something like that would happen.

@ahrilover123 the manga will ends at chapter 350. And there are 150 chapters for the sequel, and transplant the setting from the 17th to the 19th century, during Meiji Restoration.

this manga was probably my favorite of all time during the christian cult arc, sadly after that the author has had trouble keeping the themes of azumi's alienation and search for meaning flowing smoothly -- we have been stuck in a repeating loop of new friends and their deaths for a while

The art, action, and characters are all great in this series, but eventually it does become fairly rudderless as it becomes clear there isn't any greater arc to the series anymore. Some of the individual arcs are absolutely fantastic. Koyama has plots and set pieces which are very engaging and entertaining, but the narrative is clearly focused on Azumi and despite her development we never really get a pay-off. Azumi's inability to truly escape her lot in life is a clear theme, but instead of progressing in any substantive way it just turns into a beat that gets acknowledged and moved past.

Good art, great/good story, later half becomes a bit repetitive with Azumi making friends, doing her thing, then losing her friends in ever more tragic ways. Guess there's a point to it. Somewhat historically accurate.

Hm, sites like MAL or japanese wikipedia say Azumi has 350 chapters and we got 349 here...is that a mistake or there's something else?
