Makes you wonder how everything fell so hard.

What caused everyone to have a temper so short, outright murder is the next step after a bad conversation?

Did the commander grind their morale down into the red and still didn't care?

@Soleilsky It may be due to the constant warfare that the ship girls partake in. As shown, there would inevitably be many of their fellow ship girls sinking in these battles. The grief and guilt amongst other feelings from this would keep on accumulating with each passing battle and this may have caused them to lose a few screws in their heads.

In addition, the fact the they are in such an environment as war would mean that they would be in a constant "battle mode", ready to fight whenever it is required of them. Naturally this would have made them more aggressive, either towards anyone showing any form of hostility or even amongst themselves should there be a conflict of interests.

It is important to take down the fact that the nature of the commander's job would obviously make her unable to understand the problems that the ship girls face. She handles the more administrative tasks and doesn't participate in any of the actual battles with them. Hence, making her unable to empathize with them about the plight that they are in. Another thing to note is that the ship girls themselves may also be trying to prevent their personal issues from affecting the commander as they genuinely care for her well being so, do not wish to give her the ugly perspective that they have. Or maybe they have other personal reason for doing so. That's why they appear to be happy, and act normal around her. Of course the life they live in would just continuously chip at their sanity no matter how they try to counteract it. So, eventually when they reach their limit we get the story here.

Also, the part about them opposing one another may be related to the fact that most, if not all, of ship girls want to be the commander's, for lack of a better term, Number 1. Each one of them seeks to show their affection to the commander in their own way as shown when Junyou tries to cheer the commander up in Chapter 15. Of course all of them would hold a different mindset about what should be done in these situation, leading to the aforementioned, conflict of interests. This coupled with the constant mental burden on their minds from the war as also stated above, would lead them to antagonize and develop, as one could say, hatred towards each other.

I could be wrong about all of this but well it is just my personal theory about what the story is trying to show. Hopefully this answers your question even if it was 2 years late.
