Senpai's got a good head on her shoulders and heart in her chest, it would seem.

Taking something that would be justifiably hard to bear - death of a parent's never easy, much less in the throes of childhood - and making it into something that keeps you connected to the good memories of that person, is some real maturity and goodness, in the best of senses.

Adds a lot to her character in that one little reveal, honestly. Still an airhead of sorts, and obviously all the more a lovable one; but fleshing out the characters and their stories and worlds is always great to see, even in series that are relatively low-stakes like this one.

But the date was a success, even, down to the hand-holding! And now Ayumu's got an invitation to watch her crush show off.
Hopefully many more good things are in store.

Yes, and it's no longer the running, but the hand-holding that is causing this. Progress!

This just made me realize how many things this series has set up over time. Every time Ayumu is forced to run, she feels out of breath and her heartbeat becomes crazy. Well, guess what, these also happen to be symptoms of love!

This specific thing aside, we've seen so many other gags develop, vary, or gain significance. Ayumu's disliking of crowds (but she loves the aquarium date), Hayami's obsession with running (which she picked up from her mother), just to name a few off of the top of my head.

While I know everyone hates characters that "get in the way" because they assume they are just there to delay progress and payoff, that's not usually their role in the story. Usually they are there as an impetus for the protagonist to put in more effort, or come to some self awareness. Sometimes after they see how things are going, they even switch to direct support roles.

That was a cute end to the date. The line about showing off to her proving there's a little more than a normal friendship there whether she understands it or not.
