Sumo doesn't actually have all that many moves that can be used in a 'real' fight, does it? I've seen several martial art series where they try. But it generally ends up with palms, slaps, and stomps when they're down, without much else.
I would agree that if they can get you on the ground, you're in for a world of hurt. But it always seems too ceremonial and limited to be put against martial arts designed to take humans apart. Maybe in the ancient times? Was it ever used for actual combat outside the ring?

Considering the root of Sumo, it could be argued they fought like a Vale tudo. So in the most ancient times, there were no throwing technique developed until past hundred years or so to honor Shinto traditions.

@Riger If we put them in MMA and boxing ring with the rules of the former, maybe. I won't know how well they'd do in more free street fight though. Sumo matches are pretty short, so who knows how much stamina they have in longer fights. Their thick neck and large stature would really help against moves that knock-out people though.

I think the manga also mentions that in old Sumo, the rules are more like free fight with punches and kicks. I've heard something about their stature at the time is also smaller.
