Will the remake of the original grappler Baki chapter be translated? https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2019-07-09/baki-the-grappler-manga-1st-chapter-gets-remake/.148831
I kinda dislike how easily Oliva was done in by the big guy, only to have the big guy get crushed by Baki seconds after. I know Baki beats Oliva but he didn't cripple him for life :/
@ooogooman
I feel like Itagaki is just building up these sumo dudes with fodder before actually getting to them fighting the regular cast.
That or he just felt like drawing some new guys, either or.
I'm getting increasingly fed up with this arc. I don't mind "sumo is underrespected and sumo wrestlers are actually really tough"
I get that
40 straight chapters of constant wank about how awesome sumo is with VERY LITTLE variety in technique being shown? Don't like that.
6 straight matches of
"My punch had no effect on him! He's so strong! I can't do anything to him! He took me down with one hit!"
across
four different sumo wrestlers whose only differences feel like design.
And everybody involved is a nobody. If that weren't the case it would've been downright INSULTING for
this streak to occur
, but because I don't know who any of these people are, it's hard for me to be interested.
The EXCLUSIVE exception being
a fight involving LITERALLY THE MAIN CHARACTER.
I genuinely recognize that this is probably feeling more varied for people who are really into sumo...... but most previous arcs didn't require you to be intimately aware with a specific combat sport to be able to see any variety in what is being done. Especially for this length.
I was super hyped for "there's more to sumo than the professional refereed sport", since it started out talking about that, and Kengan Ashura did a FANTASTIC job with that.
But almost everything in the fights has been relatively by the book. "The first sumo fight ended with a kick!" Cool, I LOVE THAT, in that case, please show me something other than exclusively slaps, grabs, and throws. Please.
Now to be fair, this has been readable and enjoyable. HOWEVER, that doesn't change the fact that it feels like, compared to the rest of the franchise..... and ESPECIALLY to how Kengan Ashura handled Sumo.... it's been doing horribly. If I didn't know better, I'd think this whole arc was being funded fist over mouth by the Japanese sumo association. ESPECIALLY given the current mini-arc.
Earlier baki: "There's a whole other level beyond combat sports to fighting. This is REAL fighting! Even the majority of pro fighters who do things legit don't even approach what goes on here"
This arc: "This one specific combat sport's pros are basically all the best on earth of any combat sport".
we've seen three fights of this in this sub-arc and there's two fights left to go and it FEELS so painfully obvious almost exactly how they're going to go. A fight with a foregone conclusion is one thing, but this many and each taking one to three chapters, with no downtime in between, especially with the fight being virtually no contest, is too much.
