@Nayn I think it was the names of villagers. A translation note would've gone a long way for sure though. Kind of reading a translation specifically because we can't read Japanese and all.
It's the names of the villiagers from the temple listing, arranged like the stones in a natural brick wall. And my favorite detail? I beleive Naru's name is written in hirigana, the way a child would write her own name.
