there is a adaptation movie about him, not sure how the title ended up translated as "The Assailant" (2009). The original name is the protagonist's nickname "Besouro" means same as "beetle".
guaiamum is a word from "tupi", language spoken by the natives, so it doesnt really matter.
edit: maybe author let it like this, but the "by his mestre, tio Alipio" would be better translated as "by his master, uncle Alipio". the uncle here is the same like someone would use grandpa/grandma to adress any dear old person, independent of blood relationship.
