We eat it, idk about Japan but my parents are Buddhists and we don’t have a “shrine” but parents always lit an incense stick and then we ate the food when it was done versus throwing it out

Idk about actual grave visits but I imagine you can’t leave it there bc in case of ants even tho Jp ppl usually buy their own plot of land for their family graves so it wouldn’t be an issue of like a strangers grave being affected
