The male human instinct to look at something than can rip you apart but still want to pet it because it gave you the cute eyes.
To clarify, it's not just a male human instinct: your brain going to mush because of cute features or aspects ("Kindchenschema" in the words of Konrad Lorenz) is more or less a universal human instinct that probably creates an impulse for nurturing. Oxytocin is almost certainly involved. It does a lot of physical things in humans, but it's also an important neurochemical in social bonding--taking care of pets or snuggling with a lover literally releases the happy brain chemicals.

This cuteness-caregiving impulse is probably present in other mammals that spend a good deal of time raising young. Wild elephants, for instance, will often try to protect humans that they think are injured or otherwise vulnerable, as will whales--to them, we are probably the smol weird baby-things that need looking after.

Oh, and humans accidentally selected for cute puppy eyes when domesticating doggos.
And hyenas are basically wolf (i.e. dog) software running on a cat (or more accurately, giant mongoose/civet) chassis. :meguu:

tl;dr: Enako is a cute girl and her boyfriend wanting to pat cute things is literally human nature.

Hyenas are actually closer to cats than to dogs... He still should give headpat tho
Cladistically, sure, but in terms of hunting strategy and social structure, Hyenas are extremely similar to wolves and other pack-hunting canids (just with the gender roles flipped turn-ways). Hyenas evolved to fill the same niche as wolves on a continent where there were no wolves, and thanks to convergent evolution wound up basically being animals that run dog software on cat hardware.

EDIT: I just realized that Daviot's post 3 posts above me already brought up the "dog software on cat hardware" line. To keep this post from being too redundant, have a bonus fact: Foxes are basically the inverse of this - a canid that evolved to fill a similar niche as a small cat and thus convergently evolved "cat software" - which makes a certain fox VTuber's constant need to remind her viewers that she is "not a cat" even funnier.
