Every single time I come back to this manhwa I feel like I've missed one or two chapters setting up the plot, the characters, and at least a couple of Chekhov's guns that I'm seeing blasting left and right.
Honestly... 😮‍💨

It's getting a little difficult to follow the story and to empathise with our heroes' struggles. Maybe it would've been better if I binged the series, but right now I'm like, who are they again? why should I care? is there a reason it's all getting explained through a hastily put-together flashback?

Yeah, I saw the foreshadowing in the previous chapter (more like two ominous frames of the Empress plotting her cunning plots and scheming her vile schemes), but man is it unsatisfying for some reason. Maybe the obvious tear-jerker of the "I gotta do it for muh family" setup?

You should re-read the previous chapters. The interval between chapters was not long, so I can still remember what happened. For me, this manhwa is great and the battle of wits was intriguing.

The flashback is to explain what the empress did at the back, and to introduce the Rohnarts family which may become an ally in the future (most likely without the brother). Giving more story depths by telling the story of what happens around MC, you know.

What's the bet that it was the brother that tried to kill the father.

Why would she be the one accussed of lying about the prince's origin? She just brought a child that matched the Duke's description, it was the Duke who made the claim. So really it's the Duke that they should be going after in this scenario.
