Back then, rape was only a crime if the woman was already married (to somebody else).
You have a source for that? Since every other one says it was a crime and punished severely across europe and had different stipulations in everywhere else. But it was never "not a crime unless married". Even early written laws have it as a crime. And most certainly not a thing you can pull in the middle of a settlement with literal law enforcement. Funnier part is, even the assailant expected to be hanged for it but knight was fine with it lol.

Well the Spanish Inquisition was one of the first to put out the "woke" idea that rape should be treated as a crime on similar level to murder instead of "broken property" as it was before.
