Much easier to use bleach than invent "soap" and get another barrier to prove why animal fat can protect against hand miasma.

I like how the story use bleached lime as the disinfectant as that is the same thing Ignaz Semmelweis did, the one that pretty much find that dirty hand=more death. The story of the midwives saving more lives compared to the hospital is the same too as that is also the cause of how he find out about that.
