nice art. from the story, i interpreted that the only way for people with a different "trait" to be happy is to be with other people with the same "trait".
I do hope that he learned from the few kindness of others that he'll make a connection with some of the white wings instead of ripping them up when they approach him

He made glasses girl cry. No good.
Outburst of anger on people is never a way.
How to react to people who are kind to you is a good question for black wings. As for me, I try to stick to "eye for eye" principle. Maybe, maybe if they're blatantly ignorant and do something completely unneeded, they need to be put in place. But never, never freak out. Just not good.

@VINT64 he tore up the letter for her. The other kids were going to terrorize her the same way he’d been if he accepted her letter. So he played the bad guy so she wouldn’t get hurt

That's unhealthy.

Idk man I think this story really underestimates people's capacity for change. It might not come immediately but it always happens when a person feels the need to.

In the end mc finds a child just like him. I guess the intent was to show that the mc could never change because he never had somebody who understood him, but the kid will.

The thing is, he never tried to see the world through the eyes of others. It is unlikely that he would be able to give the girl a better mindset, but I guess that's beside the point.

It's not really unhealthy because as you said he had no self perceived reason to believe the acts of kindness.
He only understood after he was put in the situation where he was the one with the choice to offer kindness or not.
Sometimes, depending on the individual, especially as in the story where he is an anomaly(ostracised for it). A stranger being kind to you may not mean anything, it may be nice for the moment but after that then what.
In the end meeting someone as unfortunate(different) as him(if not worse), may have helped him realise he is not the only one there in that box of different that those people couldn't.

@VINT64 you really think a kid who spent his whole life being bullied is going to know how to be smooth? He’s probably never even had a decent conversation with anyone

@Flavor25 I say he should know. At least, should not be so rash.
And he had a decent conversation with her in infirmary before - he ignored her nicely. He could use it as basis, and ignore her again. Would be better than act of aggression.

@VINT64 you need to use a little more brain for this man. It’s not hard to understand why he acted the way he did. Doing things nicely wouldn’t have saved her. People still would have tormented her for being “the girl who confessed to the guy with black wings.” By acting rashly (yes acting because he knew what he was doing), he was able to turn her into a victim. Instead of being tormented for confessing, everyone would feel bad for her because of the way she was turned down. He saved her from being bullied with his actions. There was no other way. The world isn’t sunshine and rainbows where you can just talk your way around crappy situations.

@Flavor25 oh, really now))) Where have I seen this? Ah, how could I forget, it's OreGairu! The boi instantly calculated situation and consequences for girl, as well as means to let her escape as kawaiso victim, to be consoled by everyone))) Mastergame! Bravo, 8man, I see you soaring in sky of calculations on your black wings, high as never🤣🤣🤣
If being serious, I didn't feel that vibe from the boi. Of course it's open for interpretation, and you can stick to your opinion and believe that he acted as Hachiman 2.0.
But for me world is simple, and humans are simple. The boi just imagined the people trashing him together with the girl, got angry and freaked out. Maybe afterwards it looks like he did a good thing to her. But initially it was an impulse, the same as with barmen. Not an act, but genuine anger. IMO.
And I don't like that.
UPD. Then again,
Code:
There was no other way

. I'd prefer him tearing letter and telling her some insults in a calm, icy manner, maybe with a smirk. He surely could do it in your case, if he is calculating boi. You remember roof scene, right? That manner

Ah right, I didn't think of it this way. This makes more sense.

Still, there is something about this story that makes it seem like the message is "you can only be happy among people with the same problem". I can see that it is not what the author wanted to say, but it still felt this way (and it doesn't seem like it was just me).

This is what I've meant by unhealthy. Not the message that was intended but the one that got through.

@VINT64 you really just went on a rant about an anime you’re assuming that I’ve seen.

Also you say people are simple then you say the MC should have done the big brain thing to do: smirk and play it cool.

Author certainly is good at capturing states of mind of characters through storytelling; strong work, like your other stories I've read.

That was actually pretty good but just because your different doesn’t mean you should treat that person garbage this world is to broken it really does saddens me, another great and short story by the author.
