I always refer to this place as "The Jupiter room", since it's pretty much that big. Imagine how long it would take to walk across it. To this day it is my favorite location in any fiction I've read.

I'm fairly sure that's actually the hole left behind by jupiter, after it got swallowed by the city and then converted into building materials. After all, the diameter is too specific of a number. Nearly the exact size of Jupiter.
I've said it before, but this is a Kafkaesque nightmare. There is no rime or reason to it, someone was just told to build it and didn't even question the why of it. It just got out of hand from there. That's my theory.
