The manga began in 2013, and Shuhei's line "A lot has happened these past 2 or 3 years" could refer to the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011.
(Miyagi Prefecture, where the manga is set, was the main area of damage.)
Shuhei was also affected by the disaster, and as a result of his anguish over what he could do to help, I believe he decided to quit music early to become a doctor.
