I'm not sure about why you chose concert as the translation for the word ライブ. I'm friends with a lot of musicians and they don't throw around the word "concert" so lightly. For me, a concert (in the modern music context) is:
1. it's someone's primary mode of income or they make enough money off of it to live from it
2. the musician plays their own written music

For #1 two of the people in the band are college students with no following and their investment in music is just a money sink at this point so them using concert is like a group of dudes in their 40s pretending like they play concerts on weekends before they go back to their regular jobs.
For #2 it's like a cover band pretending like they're playing concerts with stuff they didn't write sounds a bit delusional.

I'd choose to use the term live performance in this instance instead. Do correct me if I'm way off on this.

@gintamacountry @mat87 I agree with your assessment of “concert.” It’s a bit much in this context. I think @Thjgthgt is correct that “gig” is a better word. It’s not only British, we use the term in America too. I’ve known a few (American) musicians over the years and they all say “gig.”

@BilliusX not American but gigs usually refer to paid "one-time" kind of work which is why the term is primarily used by musicians, so I think the term concert is used correctly in this case, its definition meaning a public performance.

ask any musician in english speaking countries and they use the term "shows", not concerts. concert isn't a term used lightly.

@gintamacountry I think you're right and wrong, it's true nowadays that you don't see musicians throw around the term "concert" very often, but it's not that they don't wanna use it lightly, it's more that the term went out of fashion, so when it's used today the meaning is a bit different. Like Musician-A says they have a concert to distinguish it from the usual bar gig and make it sound more gransiose, that's fine but in the end, the words mean the same thing. If you know any jazz musicians (or look up some recordings of classic jazz performances) they might tell you that back in those days the term concert was more common than show or gig, so it's probably the better word in the context of this manga.

Edit: If you really wanna dig into it the term gig probably came from jazz too so it was more of a transitional period between classic and jazz. so both could be fine anyway. Look into it if it really bothers you

So they don't mean the same anymore as the connotation of the word has shifted that's why the usage of concert in this context sounds unnatural and out of touch. We're talking about the contemporary context of Blue Giant that has smartphones and such here and nothing else.

@gintamacountry ahh my bad, was confusing this with Sakamichi no Apollon, I think that's set around the 1960s. Idk if that totally negates the argument though, they could just be copying what the other "jazzers" said, kind of how in classical music and jazz music some of the same terms have slightly different meanings, or like most radically different genres, that's just the more western example. All this I say from memory, so don't take my word for it, do some research if it's bugging you that much.

@faildog That's a fair distinction. I'm not a musician (just known/roomied with a few) so I'm happy to admit that I don't really know what the correct terminology is. I am, however, a language nerd, so I appreciate the semantic argument 😁
