In Brazil we would say it was two thing. It was a "Voleio de primeira". Basically, a volley is a kick with middle of the top of the foot with the ball at your side (not in front of you). You use the other foot as a pivot and rotate your body (sometimes can be done on the air, only rotating you body while you fall). Usually you fall because to rotation of the body make you lose balance after shooting. But the "de primeira" (translate to at first) is basically it was the first touch on the ball. You can to do a volley as a second touch, because you can use the first to take the ball of the ground after receiving a pass, and to open space for the kick. If you do as the first touch, you keep the momentum of the ball, so it is stronger, but it's way harder to target.
