It does say she "suddenly died in an underground fight." I guess that checks out since she's retired and last chapter mentions she hasn't been seen for a few days. Daughter got over it pretty damn fast though.

Nope, that isn't it either. I'm guessing Fumina asking "where mom was" was just to throw off the girl in the respirator and make it seem like she's doing fine to outsiders and totally not dead.
