What if just what if

Professor isn’t real but an AI program made that only exist inside her head she’s the only one that can hear or see him that’s probably why we never see the professor speak unless they are flashbacks

He is long dead now and created that program of himself so that she can continue to live happy and maybe he is somehow still alive like some downloading his brain to make the program.

Just a depressing theory.

Getting those vibes as well. Just look how overgrown the tracks and other stuff waa a few chapters earlier. That tree was at least 10 years old, unless it's some fast growing variety that I don't know about.

Theory sounds good BUT in the end of chapter 4 it was shown that professor's health is deteriorating (most likely) due to that pathogen thing.

That's why I think that the fact that he doesn't talk is somehow related to the virus' activity.

His main goal is for her to build memories and not be lonely. He's gonna die, so he doesn't talk about the future.

So this is basically "100 days until the professor dies"...

I don't think that fits with that other researcher who's POV we follow in chapter 3 and who sees them and dies right before they can meet. Nor the corpse they find following a signal. I don't think the damage or growth necessarily looks like its been that long either, both in terms of overall growth and that researcher's age, but it's also possible the end of humanity has been somewhat drawn out and lingering with a lot of people dying early but a longer tail of those who survived onwards for a while. In that case it could have been a while since it hit but there was some (constantly diminishing) level of maintenance.

Doesn't seem like this is going full Talos Principle though bittersweet nonetheless, but her level of advancement certainly raises questions. We're still a ways off from full generalized human level AI, so if the author intended to play it somewhat straight there might be something more behind her existence.

Nah, in ch 3 the girl he went to high school with was able to see the professor as he and the robot girl were walking up to her lab, hence the reason she died with a smile. He is clearly dying though given the fact that he was coughing up blood in ch 4 as well as the fact that he refuses to discuss his future plans with the robot girl.
